Kell’s shot, his boat is blown up, and with multiple gunshot wounds (and of course naked, because Kell likes being naked) he’s forced to swim to shore to escape. His peaceful vacation is disrupted a few pages into the book when his enemies locate him and begin to attack. Kell Sabin, a secret agent, is on a boat off Florida on vacation. She summarized the plot as “a secret agent in deep cover and in deep trouble and the brave and resourceful woman who saves his life and falls in love with him.” The plot description is apt, but I differ with the grade assigned. Originally published in 1987, Diamond Bay received a B+ from Ellen here at AAR. I disliked the narration and the audio experience pointed out flaws in the story that I either forgot or had ignored in an early “I love Linda Howard” haze. Big mistake this was a painful experience. When it became available for audio review, I remembered liking the book and thought it would be fun to revisit. DIAMOND BAY can be read as a standalone but is more enjoyable as a companion to MIDNIGHT RAINBOW.I read Diamond Bay in print years ago in the midst of a Linda Howard glom. It has overlapping characters with the first book in the series MIDNIGHT RAINBOW. WORTH MENTIONING: This book was first published as a category romance in the late 1980s.ĬONNECTED BOOKS: DIAMOND BAY is the second book in the Rescues series. The book is part of the serious alpha male hero trend in the 1980s but Rachel is no naive innocent. No whining from Rachel even as her life is turned upside down. I also loved that Rachel loves Kell and so she accepts him totally even if that means that he will leave her. Kell is determined to be alone because of the possible pain his life presents, but he cannot hold out against the determined love of a strong woman.

The characters are more complex than a normal category romance and the story is exciting and the relationship complicated. It is limited because of the length of the novel and its origin as a category romance. I loved that this story had suspense but focused on the romance. OPINION: This book was one of the first romantic suspense books I ever read.

Danger surrounds the two as they grow closer even as Kell knows that they have no future because he must be alone to do his work.

An attempt on his life has left him weak and vulnerable and in the Rachel’s hands. Kell Sabin is the chief of a shadowy group of U.S. She the stranger washes up on her beach, her instincts tell her to keep it quiet. She now runs two souvenir shops and writes. Rachel came home after her job caused the death of her husband. THE STORY: Rachel Jones, a widow and former investigative reporter, finds a man washed up on her beach. I love the strong dominant hero who is completely undone by the determined and independent heroine. FINAL DECISION: This old time romantic suspense book is one of my favorites.
